In 2002, the Bios Urn was a winner at the ADI FAD Design Awards, and in 2005 nominated as a finalist for the INDEX Award with a “Design to improve life.” During this time, one of the very first Bios Urns produced was used by the Barcelona Zoo to plant the remains of the iconic albino gorilla, known as Little Snowflake where he is now part of a beautiful African tree.

The Designers
The idea for the Bios Urn came to co-founder Gerard Moline when he was a young child. He was in the garden planting flowers and vegetables with his grandmother, when she discovered a dead bird. She instinctively took the bird, buried it in a hole and planted some wildflower seeds on top… thus giving it new life. Gerard carried this memory with him for many years, and in 1997 he created the first prototypes for the Bios Urn which later went to market in 2001. From there, Gerard spent years developing the urn until launching it in 2012 with its' current design.

The Capsula Mundi Urn, containing your loved ones ashes will be buried as a seed in the earth. The urn is made from a bio-polymer that is fully biodegradable and compostable over time. A tree, chosen in life by the deceased or later by love ones, will be planted on top of the Capsula Mundi Urn. Over time the ashes will become part of the soil which nurtures the tree. The tree will serve as a memorial for your love one and as a legacy for the future of our planet. Family and friends can continue to care for the tree through the years as it grows.
When planting your tree, a hole no less than three foot in depth should be prepared. The Capsula Mundi should be gently placed in the hole along with your tree above and covered with soil or mulch. Trees can be purchased from your local nursery or UK national provider.

The Designers
Capsula Mundi is the name of a cultural project and company founded by two Italian designers, Anna and Raoul who envision a different approach to the way we think about death. Raoul states “During the conception of our design, firstly we chose to use the universal symbols of rebirth (the egg, the tree and the foetal position) because we believe that death is not the end but the beginning of a new life, returning to the full cycle of nature. Secondly, with the environment in mind we chose to plant and grow trees rather than see them cut down to make coffins. Our wish is to help see the growth of a global green canopy so that our children and future generations may benefit by way of our small contribution.

The inspiration for the Dome Urn was to design a cremation urn that reimagined the uninspiring and old-fashioned cremation urns available on the market. The Dome Urn was launched as part of Dutch Stuff 2018 at the London Design Fair, during the London’s annual design festival. It was designed to fit within the modern-day home, redefining our pre-conceptions that cremation urns bring a sense of doom and gloom into our home.
The symbolic meaning of the dome has developed over millennia. Although the precise origins are unknown, a mortuary tradition of beautiful and opulent domes existed across the ancient world, with the circle representing perfection, eternity, and a connection with the heavens.
The Dome Urn consists of three parts: Vessel, Lid and Dome. The Vessel containing the ashes is made of beautiful Bianco Carrara marble. With the deep blue ombre Glass Dome resting on a curved marble base. Through the semi-transparent hand-painted glass wall the viewer is able to see the blurred silhouette of the vessel. Seeing the silhouette through the glass creates a feeling of presence inside of the Dome.

Each Pebble birch plywood urn is individually handcrafted – unique. This elegant, design led object of beauty is a fitting final tribute to your loved ones and can be displayed anywhere at home. The Pebble Urn has the capacity for all of an adult’s ashes.
The urn is available as a keepsake urn. This accommodates a small or token amount of ashes in its concealed base which is created two thirds of the way down by a bespoke chamfered shelf that can be sealed. The remaining space is then free to place special mementos such as letters, photographs or jewellery. Also available are smaller partitions which rest on top of the chamfered shelf allowing space for a collection of smaller mementos.
There is a smaller version of the pebble urn if you wish to keep a smaller amount of ashes of your love one or a pet (up to 1.25 ltrs).

The Artist
Davina, the artist and creator of pebble always had an intention to create her own resting place, a means by which she could nurture her own territory. Due to an unexpected illness, her project was propelled forward before it was too late to realise her design. After extensive research she chose the form of a pebble. An organic universal shape created by nature and honed by the passage of life… as we are all.
The initial design concept was a Pebble Coffin - a structure which would embrace, hold and protect the body in a relaxed position whilst remaining outwardly approachable to others with a smooth and tactile surface. She selected birch ply as the build material for its’ warmth and the symbolic effect it elicits when carved, emulating the annular rings of a tree and the cycle of life. The coffin concept was met with a wide-ranging positive response, which lead her to create the Pebble Urn.

This hand-made urn is based on a poppy seed head design. The urn has a hand-made recycled cotton bag and starch plastic bag inside to hold your love one’s ashes. The handle is made from hedgerow wood, usually hazel, which is abundant on Dartmoor. The artist chooses quirky curves which add an individual quality to the urn.

The Artist
Yuli is originally from Norway, but has spent most of her life living and working in Devon. The traditional weaving and knitting heritage of Norway deeply influenced her since she was old enough to hold needles to knit with. She started creating felt products in the 1980s and now creates beautiful coffins and urns, which are 100% plastic and metal free and fully biodegradable.
The following passage is the Yuli’s mantra: “If you have to make a thing, you must know the background of it, the skeleton, the foundations, the actual stuff that the materials have grown out of, their connections with their natural background, their biotechnics – and then building can begin. And then the reason for making, the purpose, the human connection. All sides must be considered and known. You cannot just make.”

The colourful Acorn Urns are a gentle, nature inspired place for your loved one’s ashes. Made in England by ARKA, they have a specially designed lid and base made from moulded recycled kraft and paper, with the stalk of the lid made from a twist of tissue paper. They are finished with paper made from mulberry pulp. The close-fitting lid makes the Acorn Urn ideal for the storage or burial of ashes.
